Dr. Amy Lightner - Colorectal Surgeon, Professor, and Researcher
Dr. Amy Lightner is a Professor at Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. She teaches cellular and molecular biology and immunology. She also runs a translational laboratory working on drug discovery for inflammatory bowel disease. In addition to translational and clinical research, Dr. Amy Lightner is a colorectal surgeon providing clinical care to patients at Scripps Clinic.
Before joining Scripps Clinic, Dr. Amy Lightner was founder and Director of the Center of Regenerative Medicine and Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic and before that Medical Director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. Her experience also includes Chief Medical Officer role in biotech.
Dr. Amy Lightner has run several clinical trials in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. She has also been awarded numerous grants from organizations such as the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, Helmsley Charitable Trust Foundation, and the Litwin Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. She is a recipient of the Sherman Prize for Emerging Leaders in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Dedicated to medical research, Dr. Lightner has published more than 370 peer-reviewed publications in PubMed and has authored chapters in dozens of books. She is editor in chief of Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery Open and is an associate editor of the Diseases of the Colon and Rectum. Dr. Amy Lightner has a BA in human biology from Stanford University and an MD from Boston University.
